Application tape, also known as transfer tape, is an essential tool for applying vinyl graphics. This comprehensive guide offers tips and tricks for the successful use of paper application tape:

Preparing the Graphic

  • Avoid Air Bubbles and Wrinkles:
When laminating the application tape to the vinyl, whether by hand or with a laminator, it's crucial to prevent air bubbles and wrinkles. These will transfer to the final graphic. A laminator or a dedicated dispensing system can help achieve a smooth application.
  • Don't Stretch the Tape:
Stretching the application tape during lamination can cause it to shrink later, leading the vinyl graphic to curl.
  • Use a Single Piece of Tape:
For best results, use one continuous sheet of application tape to cover the graphic. Overlapping pieces can create a fine line of bubbles in the final application.
  • Cure Printed Graphics:
For screen-printed or digitally printed decals, allow the inks and clear coats to cure thoroughly before applying the application tape. The recommended curing time is 24 hours for inks and another 24 hours before applying the tape. Applying tape too early can cause the tape and graphic to bond excessively or even lead to ink delamination.
  • Apply Soon After Taping:
Avoid storing the graphic for extended periods after applying the application tape. The bond between the tape and the vinyl can strengthen over time, especially in warm conditions, making the tape difficult to remove.

Wet Application Recommendations

  • Dry Application is Preferred:
Whenever possible, apply the graphic dry. Wet applications require more time for the vinyl's adhesive to bond to the substrate.
  • Use Minimal Fluid:
If a wet application is necessary, use the least amount of application fluid required to do the job.
  • Assist Tape Removal:
If a paper application tape is difficult to remove during a wet application, lightly spray the tape with application fluid and wait 20-30 seconds. The fluid will penetrate the paper and soften the adhesive, making it easier to peel.

Removing the Application Tape

  • Pull at a 180° Angle:
To prevent the graphic from lifting off the substrate, remove the application tape by pulling it back on itself at a 180-degree angle.
  • Final Squeegee:
After removing the tape, use a squeegee with a low-friction sleeve to re-squeegee the entire graphic, paying special attention to the edges. This minimizes edge lifting and helps ensure a strong bond.
